The Russian steel producer Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has announced that it has continued to expand its product range by mastering the production of high-strength hot-dip galvanized flats of 320 and 350 grades, under GOST R 52246-2004 standard, of 0.6-2.0 mm thickness and 1,000-1,465 mm width. The mechanical characteristics of the product fully meet the requirements of both Russian and international standards.

High-strength steel is nowadays widely used in the construction industry. Its main advantage compared with commercial steel is that when producing building structures, the thickness of the metal can be reduced, while at the same time retaining its strength characteristics.

In addition, earlier this month MMK announced that its flat rolling shop No. 8 produced and shipped for export the first trial batch of cold rolled strip of high-strength low-alloy steel of 420 strength class (HC420LA). Up to now, MMK mastered the production of products from HC420LA steel grade under EN 10268:2006 standard, of 1.8 mm thickness and of up to 480 mm width.

Moreover, in November this year, MMK's flat rolling shop No. 5 produced and shipped a trial batch of cold rolled strip from rephosphorized steel of 220 strength class to Russia's largest carmaker AvtoVAZ.

Rephosphorized steel (RS steel), widely used in the automotive sector, is characterized by a phosphorus content of up to 0.12 percent, which, in combination with other elements, improves not only such qualities as strength, yield and elongation, but also resistance to atmospheric corrosion and weldability. Currently, MMK's flat rolling shop No. 5 can produce cold rolled strip of 220 strength RS steel and of 0.7 to 2.8 mm thickness under Russian and European standards.
