In an accident during scheduled demolition work on Sunday, June 13, at Ukrainian Ordzhonikidze iron ore mine, a part of Metinvest's iron ore subsidiary Central GOK (CGOK), one person was killed during an explosion which created a huge pit covering an area of about 16 hectares and up to 80 meters deep.
As a result of the accident, the mine's main ventilation shaft was partially destroyed and the operations at the mine have been halted. A special commission has been formed to investigate the accident at the mine.
According to CGOK and SevGOK's public relations manager Matvey Dmitrenko, the accident will have an insignificant impact on the volume of ore extraction at Metinvest's subsidiaries and on iron ore supplies to the country's steelmaking plants, Interfax-Ukraine news agency has reported.
The monthly ore production at the Ordzhonikidze iron ore mine was about 150,000 mt, which, according to Mr. Dmitrenko, is not a very significant volume and may be offset by increasing ore extraction volumes at other iron ore subsidiaries of Metinvest.
So far, no estimates have been issued for the financial cost of the accident, and it is not yet clear when the mine will restart its operations.
