Mexico’s Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (CANACERO) said the nation’s steel production fell 6 percent during the first four months of the year, while imports from China jumped 158 percent, year-on-year.
Canacero expressed its concerns with the nation’s domestic market by saying it expects steel production will reach 18 million mt in 2015, which is below the nation’s consumption potential.
According to media reports, such a scenario “puts at risk” Mexico’s steel industry MXN 311 million investment goal for 2015, as several stoppages and layoffs are expected this year.
