Mexican steel production declines in May

Mexican steel production in the first five months of 2015 declined 4.8 percent, year-on-year, according to data from the National Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero).

Canacero said Mexico produced 7.7 million mt of steel in January-May, while last year’s output totaled 8 million mt.

Meanwhile, domestic consumption of the product rose 11.8 percent year-on-year, fueled mainly by imports, which increased 11.4 percent year-on-year, reaching 5.6 million mt in the five-month period.
