Mexico's iron and steel industry association (Canacero) has predicted that domestic steel consumption in 2012 will total 21.69 million mt, up 4.4 percent year on year.
In 2011, Mexican steel consumption reached 20.76 million mt, rising by 5.8 percent compared to 2010. Meanwhile, the total steel output of Mexico in 2011 amounted to 17.8 million mt, indicating an increase of 6.6 percent year on year. Canacero stated that Mexican steel output has been increasing since 2009 and predicted that in the coming years Mexico's self-sufficiency in steel supply will continue to remain above 80 percent.
