Mexican rebar production drops 24 percent in May

Mexican production of rebar decreased 24.3 percent, year-over-year, in May to 331,000 metric tons (mt), the worst percentage drop and the lowest volume manufactured in at least so far this year and is the second consecutive annual drop, according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.

In May, rebar represented 20.9 percent of Mexico’s total steel production—number one among all steel products—compared to 25.0 percent last February.

Apparent consumption of rebar registered its first drop in the first five months of the year in May, decreasing 6.4 percent to 337,000 mt, the second lowest so far this year. In May, rebar was the fourth most consumed finished steel product.

In exports, the volume of rebar decreased 72.7 percent in May to total 21,000 mt, the lowest level so far this year.

In the accumulated January-May, rebar production decreased 1.4 percent, year over year, to 1.87 million mt. Consumption increased 9.2 percent to 1.75 million mt.
