German plantmaker SMS Demag has announced the receipt of an order from Jindal South West Steel Ltd (JSW Steel), the fully integrated steel plant of India's Jindal Group, for the extension of its steelworks and for the supply of two X-Cast continu¬ous casters.

SMS Demag is to supply JSW Steel's X-Melt steelworks with two 175-t BOF con¬verters, converter tilt drives, a blowing lance system, bottom stirring equipment, slag retention systems and materials management. Moreover, as part of the order, SMS Demag is also to deliver a primary dust collection system, in¬cluding a gas switch-over station and a gas tank with a volume of 50,000 cubic meters.

The supply order also includes two single-strand slab casters with a total production capacity of 3.6 million mt per year. At a maximum casting speed of 1.85 m/min, the casters produce slabs in gauges of 220, 260 or 300 mm, and in widths between 1,000 and 2,200 mm.

The plant with the new equipment in question forms part of JSW Steel's second expansion phase and is scheduled to be commissioned by the middle of 2009.

The capacity increase will enable JSW Steel to deal with the growing demand for automotive and steel tube grades in India.

The financial details have not been disclosed.
