Jiangsu Province accelerates work on energy saving and emissions reduction

During the 2006-2009 period, China's Jiangsu Province showed a strong performance in its program for energy saving and emissions reduction, mainly due to its significant elimination of outdated capacities. According to the official data, in the period in question up to the end of 2009 Jiangsu Province had totally eliminated 7.922 million mt of outdated capacities in the steel industry and 29 million mt of backward production capacities in the cement sector; in addition it idled 4,631 chemical plants. At the same time, several small domestic enterprises in the coking, papermaking and alcohol industries were also shut down. 

Since 2007, Jiangsu Province-based Shagang Steel has closed two 24-square meter sinter plants, two 20-mt blast furnace and 32 S7 electric transformer units. Besides, the company has commissioned the reconstruction of blast furnaces at its plants using world advanced technology in line with the company's targets for energy saving and emissions reduction. After the reconstruction is completed, energy consumption per metric ton of steel at the rebuilt furnaces will be 40 percent lower than average domestic levels. For the whole year of 2010, Shagang Steel plans to achieve energy savings of 150,000 mt of standard coal.
