According to reports, major Japanese steelmakers are considering the formation of a consortium to buy overseas iron ore exploration mines in order to increase their self-sufficiency in this key raw material.

The consortium may target new development projects in Brazil and those located on the west coast of Africa.

The Japanese government plans to support the initiative by providing low-interest loans.

Japan is fully dependent on imported iron ore in its steel production.
