Iron ore and coal trade on US Great Lakes strengthens in April

The Lake Carriers' Association announced Wednesday that US-flag Great Lakes freighters carried 8.2 million tons of dry-bulk cargo in April-up 8 percent year-on-year but slightly below the five-year average for April.

Cargos of iron ore were up 10.6 percent year-on-year and coal cargos for power generation and steel production rose 13.1 percent.

Through April, US-flag cargos stand at 14.1 million tons, an increase of 11.5 percent compared to the same point a year ago.
