An Iranian consortium comprised of ten private sector rolling mills last week started the construction of a steel plant with a planned capacity of 1.5 million metric tons per year, as reported by Iranian sources. The new plant, named Negin Kalij-e-Fars, will produce steel billet.

The plant site is located near Khaf city which is close to the Sangan iron ore mine in the northeastern Iranian province of Khorasan Razavi. In the groundbreaking ceremony for the plant, Mohammad Masoud Samienejad, the Iranian deputy minister of industries and mines, said that construction of the plant is expected to be completed within three years.
