India-based global pipe manufacturer Welspun Corporation has stated that it does not expect to be affected by the import duties recently imposed by the US Department of Commerce (US DOC) on certain circular welded carbon-quality steel pipe (standard pipe) from India.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, the US announced a preliminary import duty of nearly 286 percent for the imports of standard pipes from India to offset government subsidies. A final decision on duty rates is expected in August.

The import duty in question is applicable on non-API circular-welded standard pipes of 16" and below diameter. Welspun stated that the company is not exporting any product under this category to the US and thus the import duty shall have no impact on its Indian operations.

Additionally, Welspun announced that it is building an ERW plant with an annual capacity of 175,000 mt (6" to 20") and a coating plant in the US to service its clients in North America. The facilities are scheduled to be commissioned by March 2013.
