India’s ministry of mines has issued a notification giving effect to a quality control order (QCO) for nickel, a government official said on Wednesday, September 27.

The official said that, as per the notification, with effect from December 23, 2023, no nickel will be allowed to be manufactured, imported, stored, traded and sold without mandatory quality certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

The move is aimed at preventing the sale and import of sub-standard quality nickel in the domestic market.

In the case of imports, the importer will have to apply for quality certification from BIS which will inspect the plant overseas from which imports will be made, after which the quality certification would be issued to the importer.
