India’s finished steel output gains momentum

Indian finished steel production rose 7% from 2.8 million tons in April 2004 to 3 million tons in April 2005. In addition, the consumption of finished steel during the same period increased 4.8% from 2.46 million tons to 2.56 million tons. For April, pig iron production was 275'000 tons, an increase of 23.3% from a year earlier. The consumption of pig iron during the same period also rose 6.13% year on year to 225'000 tons. The steel exports rose 14.3% year on year from 350'000 tons to 400'000 tons in April 2005.
