The Indian government is considering the re-imposition of export duty on flat steel products, to the tune of 15 percent for both HRC and CRC, in order to discourage exports of these products and boost their availability in the domestic market.
The final decision on the issue will be taken by the Committee of Secretaries (CoS) following a review of the prices of essential commodities.
In May of the current year, India had imposed export duties on flat rolled products, including 10 percent for CRC and 15 percent for HRC. However, in the following month the government reconsidered its decision and withdrew its duties on flat products.
The current proposal does not include the re-imposition of the duties on galvanized steel and tubes, which were also withdrawn in June.
