Availability of scrap in India is going to be challenging as more than 60 countries have either banned or are in the process of banning scrap exports, secretary of the ministry of steel, Nagendra Nath Sinha, has said.

The steel ministry secretary said that the lower usage of scrap in steelmaking in India is not meeting the government's expectations for bringing carbon emissions down.

“Unlike the Western countries, India's scrap usage in steelmaking is lower. India had availability of around 25 to 27 million mt of scrap and going forward this number will certainly go up, but not as much we would like for our carbon emissions to come down,” Sinha said.

He also said that iron ore availability will also come under challenge as exploration of newer areas in deeper forest areas are difficult to mine on account of various issues including biodiversity.
