Iranian steel producer Hormozgan Steel is to commence production at its second direct reduced iron (DRI) module in September this year. The producer's first iron making plant was inaugurated in March by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Each of the iron making plants, using Midrex DRI technology, has an annual capacity of 825,000 mt of sponge iron. Meanwhile, Hormozgan Steel is also planning to commission its new steelmaking plant with an annual capacity of 1.5 million mt in early 2010.

Hormozgan Steel, which is based in the special zone for mining and metal industries in the Persian Gulf about 13 km west of Bandar Abbas, has a current steelmaking capacity of 1.5 million mt of crude steel.
