Italian plantmaker Danieli has announced that China-based HBZX High Tech, part of Hebei Iron & Steel Group (HBIS), has become the first steelmaker producing direct reduced iron (DRI) using more than 60 percent hydrogen in the feed gas mix.

The production at the HBZX plant has an annual capacity of 600,000 mt. The plant is the first hydrogen-enriched gas-powered DRI industrial production facility in the world.

The HBZX plant uses Energiron® direct reduction technology supplied by Danieli, allowing the highest energy efficiency and product quality with the use of hydrogen as a reducing agent up to 100 percent.
