Germany-based TAKRAF GmbH, a subsidiary of Italy-based equipment producer Tenova, has announced that it has inked a deal with Australian iron ore giant Rio Tinto for equipment supply.

As part of the deal, TAKRAF will provide an in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) and material handling system for Rio Tinto’s Simandou iron ore project in Guinea. The German company will also be responsible for the design, manufacturing and delivery of the IPCC and material handling systems.

The Simandou iron ore complex is known as one of the largest unexploited high-grade iron ore deposits in the world. With the support of the Guinean government, the partners in the Simandou mining project have launched the production process.

According to TAKRAF, the crushing system, which is a part of the IPCC, will have a capacity of 13,200 mt per hour.

“As steel producers adopt various initiatives to reduce their carbon emissions, the demand for lower-impurity and higher-grade iron ore - essential feedstock for steel production - is growing. Simandou’s premium quality ore will thus play an important role in the global energy transition,” TAKRAF Group CEO Thomas Jabs stated.
