According to the data released by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), new passenger car registrations in Germany increased by six percent year on year with 244,500 new vehicles registered in December. Germany's passenger car exports in the month in question fell by one percent year on year to 325,900 units.

In the whole year of 2011, Germany's total passenger car output reached 5,870,900 units, up six percent, its passenger car exports amounted to 4,516,200 units, up seven percent, while new registrations increased by nine percent to 3,173,600 units, all compared to 2010. According to the association, a recovery has been seen within two years from the dramatic decline in 2009.

Matthias Wissmann, president of the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), said that the German car market has seen greater stability in 2011 than many had anticipated, despite the ongoing discussion about the debt crisis in Europe. "Our market share has risen to over 70 percent," he said, adding that they are cautiously optimistic about the automotive sector in 2012.
