Gerdau to idle melting and rolling operations at Mississippi mill

Gerdau Special Steel North America will idle melting and rolling operations at the company’s Jackson, Mississippi plant, according to a company statement. Finishing operations will continue, but approximately 140 employees will be laid off.

The company said melting and rolling equipment will be maintained in the event a restart is deemed feasible.

Gerdau said the decision to idle certain operations was necessary to “rationalize company costs” by allocating product mix to specific plants.
