Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau, through its Dominican Republic subsidiary Gerdau Metaldom, has opened a cut-and-bend rebar mill in the city of Santo Domingo, the company told SteelOrbis on Tuesday.

The DOP 120 million ($2.61 million) mill is Gerdau’s third facility at its complex in Santo Domingo, and is expected to supply clients domestically as well as in Central America and in the Caribbean.

“We’re convinced that with this new cut-and-bend plant we’re contributing to have a stronger and more competitive civil construction sector, guaranteeing the quality required by local authorities and global standards regulators,” the company’s president, Carlos Valiente, told local media.

The start-up of the new mill is part of Gerdau’s strategy to become Central America’s and the Caribbean’s No. 1 steelmaker, the company said.

Gerdau Metaldom produces flats and longs, and has a 1 million mt/year installed capacity.
