Foreign direct investment in Chinese manufacturing down 2.14% in H1

In June this year, foreign direct investment (FDI) in China (excluding the banking, securities and insurance sectors) increased by 20.12 percent year on year to $14.389 billion, as announced by China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) on July 17.

In the first six months of this year, foreign direct investment in China amounted to $61.984 billion, increasing by 4.9 percent year on year. Meanwhile, in the given period new enterprises established in China by foreign direct investment totaled 10,630 units, down 9.18 percent year on year.

In the January-June period, FDI in China's manufacturing sector totaled $26.441 billion, down 2.14 percent year on year and accounting for 42 percent of the total. In particular, FDI in China's ferrous smelting and processing sector in the first half was up 73.57 percent year on year.

In the given period, foreign direct investment in China's services sector totaled $30.629 billion, up 12.43 percent year on year and accounting for 49 percent of the total.

In the first half of the current year, FDI in China's eastern region was $51.174 billion, increasing by 1.69 percent year on year and accounting for 82.56 percent of the total. FDI in China's central region amounted to $5.577 billion, increasing by 15.75 percent year on year and accounting for nine percent of the total. FDI in China's western region was $5.233 billion, increasing by 32.54 percent year on year and accounting for 8.44 percent of the total.

In the first six months, foreign direct investment from EU-27 countries and the US maintained rapid growth. Foreign direct investment from EU-27 countries was up 14.68 percent year on year to $4.035 billion, while foreign direct investment from the US was up 12.29 percent year on year to $1.825 billion.

Overall foreign direct investment from 10 countries/regions in Asia (Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and South Korea) was $53.78 billion, up 5.31 percent year on year. In particular, foreign direct investment from Hong Kong to the Chinese mainland was $39.715 billion, up 6.39 percent year on year. Foreign direct investment from Japan to the Chinese mainland was $4.687 billion, up 14.37 percent year on year.
