Kolkata-headquartered Indian state-controlled coal mining company Coal India Limited (CIL) will hold an auction of coal supply linkages of an estimated volume of 25 million mt for sponge iron producers by December 2017 or January 2018, sources in CIL said on Tuesday, September 19.

The sources said that CIL is in the process of auctioning supply linkages for 27 million mt of coal for the cement sector and this will be completed by the end of the current month, and the process of linkage auction for sponge iron producers will commence soon thereafter and actual bidding will be held in December-January.

The volume of coal to be offered to the sponge iron sector will not be impacted by the current shortage of coal being faced by thermal power plants across the country, the sources added.
