Coal exports from Queensland up 16.6 percent in April

In April this year, coal exports from Australian ports Hay Point, Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT), Abbot Point and Gladstone located in the state of Queensland rose by 16.6 percent year on year and by 1.8 percent month on month to 16.46 million mt, according to data released by North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation and Gladstone Ports Corporation.

In particular, coal exports from the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT) in the given month totaled 5.27 million mt, up 61.9 percent year on year. Meanwhile, in April shipments from Hay Point decreased by 11.3 percent year on year to 3.64 million mt, while shipments from Abbot Point amounted to 2.65 million mt, up 29.0 percent year on year. In addition, exports of coal from Gladstone Port grew by 4.2 percent compared to the same month of 2022 to 4.90 million mt in April.

In April, supplies from Gladstone to Japan accounted for 37.7 percent of the total exports, while India, China and South Korea accounted for 20.5 percent, 15.5 percent and 14.0 percent, respectively.

In the meantime, total coal shipments from the ports in question in the January-April period of the current year amounted to 60.47 million mt, SteelOrbis has learned.
