Coal exports from PWCS up nine percent in Jan-May

Coal exports from the Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) terminals based at Port of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, totaled 7.78 million mt in May, falling by 22.2 percent compared to April, according to the company's announcement. 15 percent of the total coal handled at the terminals was coking coal.

In the first five months of the year, coking coal exports from PWCS constituted 14 percent of the total coal exports which amounted to 41.9 million mt, rising nine percent compared to the same period last year.

According to the released information, Japan was the largest export destination for coal shipments from PWCS in May, with shipments constituting 54.9 percent of the total shipments, while coal exports to China made up 16.7 percent of the total.
