Coal exports from Australia’s Newcastle port increase

In the week ended September 2, coal shipments from the Port of Newcastle in Queensland, the coal producing state of Australia, totaled 3.4 million mt, according to Newcastle Port Corporation. The figure constitutes an increase of 23 percent compared to the previous week ended August 26, in which a week-on-week increase of 15.6 percent in coal shipments had been observed.

In the whole month of August, Newcastle port exported 12,52 million mt of thermal and coking coal, while the port authority has forecast that Newcastle port will ship a total of 12.45 million mt for the whole of September. In August 2012, Newcastle port had exported almost 10.1 million mt of thermal and coking coal.

Anglo American, Peabody Energy, Rio Tinto and Xstrata are some of the larger exporters to ship coal from Newcastle port.
