Coal exports from Australia’s Newcastle port increase

In the week ended March 25, coal shipments from the Port of Newcastle in Queensland, the coal producing state of Australia, totaled 2.4 million mt, according to Newcastle Port Corporation. The figure constitutes an increase of 1.3 percent compared to the previous week ended March 18, in which a week-on-week decrease of 4.3 percent in coal shipments had been observed.

In the period of March 1-25, Newcastle port exported 8.1 million mt of thermal and coking coal, while the port authority forecasts that Newcastle port will ship a total of 10.25 million mt for the whole of March. Newcastle port's thermal and coking coal exports amounted to 8.8 million mt in the same period of the previous month, and totaled 7 million mt in March 1-26, 2012.

Anglo American, Peabody Energy, Rio Tinto and Xstrata are some of the larger exporters to ship coal from Newcastle port.
