China’s trade surplus surges to $35.9 billion in May

In May of the current year, China's total foreign trade value amounted to $355.024 billion, indicating a year-on-year increase of 3.0 percent, as announced by the Chinese customs authorities on June 8. In the given month, the total value of China's exports amounted to $195.473 billion, up 7.0 percent, while Chinese imports totaled $159.551 billion in value, down 1.6 percent, both on year-on-year basis, resulting in a trade surplus of $35.9 billion, compared with a trade surplus of $18.5 billion in April.

In the January-May period of the current year, China's foreign trade value amounted to $1.6791 trillion, up 0.2 percent, with a total export value of $875.199 billion, decreasing by 0.4 percent, and a total import value of $803.901 billion, up 0.8 percent, all year on year. The trade surplus for the period in question was $71.297 billion.
