China announced coke export quota for 2006

SteelOrbis Shanghai China's Ministry of Commerce announced on its website 2006 total export quota for major industrial products such as coke. In this announcement, quota for coke is 14 million metric tons, equaling that of 2005. In the first 11 months of 2005, China exported 11.51 million metric tons of coke, fell 15.5 percent from a year earlier. The total 2005 coke export volume is estimated at 12.5 million metric tons, lower than the quota. Influenced by the rapid expansion of international and domestic coke production capacity, China's coke export price and the volume are low. The newly announced quota is still higher than the 2005 real-term export volume, but this will not have substantial influence on the market. In order to protect the ecological environment, China enhances its supervision on medium and small coke producers. Many coke producing companies in Shanxi and Inner Mongolia are being closed down. This movement is a powerful support to the market prices.
