Statistics Canada reported Tuesday that manufacturing sales increased 2.6 percent to $49.2 billion in September, following increases in August and July. Petroleum sales led the increase with a 13.7 percent jump, while sales in the transportation industry increased 7.1 percent to $8 billion. Meanwhile, sales of primary metals edged 0.3 percent lower in September, and fabricated metal product sales increased 1.7 percent.
Manufacturing inventories increased in September as well, rising 0.4 percent to $63.9 billion--the 12th consecutive increase. New orders also rose, climbing 4.8 percent to $51 billion in September, due to higher petroleum, aerospace and fabricated metal products orders.
