Canacero: Construction and automotive consume 72.8 percent of the steel in Mexico

Mexico, the 14th largest steel producer in the world, recorded the construction industry as its largest consumer of steel with more than 50 percent, followed by the automotive industry with around a fifth of the total and in third place the manufacturing of metal products, reveals a study by the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) and seen by SteelOrbis.

According to Canacero, 54.5 percent of steel consumption in Mexico is carried out in activities related to the private and public construction industry with civil engineering works, building (residential and non-residential) that consume wire, rebar, commercial profiles, beams, nails, wire rod, sheet, plate, structural profiles, tubes among other finished steel products.

The automotive industry, one of the most dynamic economic sectors in the Mexican economy, consumes 18.3 percent of the steel in Mexico. Consumption is the manufacture of light automobiles, heavy trucks, semi-trailers, chassis, bodies, engines, parts and accessories for motor vehicles, among others.

The manufacturing of metal products in Mexico consumes 12.6 percent of steel. Among the main products are water heaters, scales, visual signs, hand tools, packaging, containers, tanks. In addition to metal furniture such as racks, shelving, stackers, among others.

The rest of the steel consumed is divided into three divisions, machinery and equipment consumes 6.0 percent, electrical equipment consumes 4.0 percent and domestic end-uses consume 4.0 percent.

Data from the World Steel Association, in 2022 Mexico was the fourteenth largest producer of liquid steel in the world with 18.1 million metric tons (mt). Data from Canacero show that last year, the consumption of finished steel products was 24.8 million mt.
