Fontana, California-based US flat steel and steel pipe producer California Steel Industries, Inc. (CSI) has announced that in the second quarter of 2010 it registered a net income of $18.5 million. In the first quarter of 2010, the company had posted a net income of $10.4 million, and a loss of $2.8 million in Q2 2009. CSI's sales revenues for the second quarter this year stood at $301.7 million, increasing by 30 percent quarter on quarter and almost three times higher on year-on-year basis.
In the second quarter of 2010, CSI's steel product shipments amounted to 329,425 metric tons, increasing by 105.35 percent year on year and up 11 percent quarter on quarter.
Meanwhile, in the first half of 2010, CSI's net sales totaled $534.4 million, 113 percent higher than the first half of 2009. Sales tonnage was also higher at 625,970 metric tons, more than double as compared to the corresponding period of 2009.
Commenting on the results, CSI president and CEO Vicente Wright said, "In the first semester of this year, we saw higher shipments, mainly due to restocking, and we saw higher average sales prices, but we are not convinced that this is a trend that will continue throughout the balance of the year. Increasing utilization rates in the steel industry is impacting sales prices and the continued high level of unemployment is impacting demand - both items of concern to us."
