Brazil’s attorney general’s office, AGU, is looking to revert a decision that avoided the Tubarao port, in the city of Vitoria, to be interdicted. The port is owned by miner and iron ore producer Vale, and is used by a number of clients, including steelmaker ArcelorMittal in Brazil.
According to a media report, AGU asked the annulment of a court decision that prevented the Tubarao port from being shut down.
A Brazilian court temporary suspended the activities of the Tubarao port in Vitoria due to sea and air pollution.
According to local media Seculo Diario, AGU’s request indicates “mistakes” in the judgment proceedings that lifted the interdiction at the Vale-owned port.
The port handles coal and also serves the needs of ArcelorMittal in Brazil. The Tubarao port is one of Brazil’s main ports for iron ore exports. About 35 percent of Vale’s iron ore exports are made through the Tubarao port.
If AGU’s appeal is accepted, there could be a upheaval in the case, potentially affecting both Vale and ArcelorMittal Brazil.
