Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's Public Ministry is seeking to stop steelmaker Ternium SA's steel project in the country's southeastern state, according to news reports on Monday. The Public Ministry has already filed legal action with a court, alleging there may have been abnormalities in the process by which Ternium received an installation license last month from Rio de Janeiro's environmental authorities. Apparently, studies regarding the project's environmental impact were not completed.
As a result, the ministry called for work on the 8.4 million metric ton-slab mill to be suspended until issues with the licensing process can be dealt with. Whether or not Ternium will be able to construct the project will depend on the Rio de Janeiro court's ruling.
