Northern Chinese steelmaker Beitai Iron and Steel Group has stated that, due to its program for energy savings and emissions reductions, it managed to save RMB 400 million in the first half of the current year and expects to make savings of RMB 800 million for the whole of the year.
In 2009 Beitai Iron and Steel Group invested RMB 700 million to modify six coke ovens and also built four coke dry quenching (CDQ) devices and recycled significant volumes of tar and sulfur.
Meanwhile, the steelmaker has placed emphasis on thermal power recycling with the aim of reducing coal and electricity consumption. The company invested RMB 6.5 million to install a top-pressure recovery turbine (TRT) power facility for four blast furnaces, and every year the excess thermal power from the furnaces generates about 0.1 billion kWh of electricity. In addition, blast furnace gas is used to generate electricity, saving 187,000 mt of coal every year.
