On September 19, Shanghai-based Baosteel's large diameter longitudinal welded pipe line commenced production operations. The completion and launch of this production line fills in a gap in Chinese production of large size pipes for oil and gas transportation. Also, marking a step forward in the production of large size longitudinal submerged arc welded pipe, the new production line can give strong impetus to the development of key projects in China such as the West-East natural gas transmission project.

A key item in Baosteel's 11th five-year plan, the company's large size longitudinal submerged arc welded pipe project also includes moulding, welding and finishing facilities. The new production line has an annual capacity of 500,000 mt, with a breakdown of 400,000 mt of pipe for pipeline use and 100,000 mt of structural pipes. The maximum grade is designed to be X100.
