Austria-based plantmaker Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has announced that Azerbaijani structural steel producer Baku Steel has placed an order with it for a new 50-ton electric arc furnace.

The order worth €7 million is part of an expansion project aimed at increasing Baku Steel's production capacity to around 1.1 million mt of steel per year. Siemens will also supply mechanical equipment for a ladle furnace and a waste gas cleaning system, which will reduce the emissions of the steel works to European standards.

The project is scheduled to be completed in April 2013.
