On December 10, Australian iron ore producer Atlas Iron Limited announced that it has shipped over one million mt of iron ore in the first year of its operations at the Pardoo Direct Shipping Ore (DSO) Project in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Atlas has shipped the ore in question through FMG's Port Hedland port facility.

According to the company's statement, the strong production performance confirms that Atlas is achieving all of its key production and operating targets as it progressively ramps up iron ore production from its North Pilbara projects.

"This is a fantastic achievement for the company, particularly when you consider that we started mining in the middle of the global financial crisis in late 2008. I would like to thank Atlas staff, our contractors and FMG," said Atlas' managing director David Flanagan.

Atlas has shipped 1,082,912 wet metric tons of iron ore since December 2008, of which 1,020,758 wet metric tons were shipped in the 2009 calendar year.
