Australia-based mining and materials company Arrium Limited (formerly known as OneSteel) has announced that it has made its first iron ore sale from its Southern Iron operations located in South Australia.

The first sale has been made via rail to Darwin and provides cash benefits and facilitates the commissioning of the new Southern Iron infrastructure. The first shipments through the company's expanded Whyalla Port remain to be scheduled for the current quarter.

The company also announced its revised expectations for sales and port capacity. Accordingly, Arrium expects export iron ore sales to reach 11 million mt per year by mid-2013 and then to increase to 12 million per year by July-August 2013. The capacity of Whyalla Port will increase to 13 million mt per year from 12 million mt per year following the expansion.
