Argentinian steel tubing producer Tenaris Siderca agreed not to lay off 189 workers at its Campana plant, following a meeting with a local union and the country’s labor ministry late on Friday.
The nation’s metal workers union, UOM, told SteelOrbis the company “compulsively” let go 189 workers at its Campana plant last week, and they haven’t agreed with the terms of a company’s proposal, in which the employees should receive about 60 percent of their wages while joining a provisional layoff program.
“Such a proposal was rejected by the … [workers]. A denouncement was then filed at the [nation’s] labor ministry and after 48 hours the employees were reincorporated to their jobs,” Francisco Furlan, a spokesperson for UOM, said.
The executive added both the workers and Siderca agreed to keep the employees’ wages at 80 percent. The provisional layoff program was extended for six more months, according to Furlan.
Siderca wasn’t immediately available to comment.
