Argentina reduces import duty on alternative fuel vehicles

Tuesday, 16 May 2017 22:40:02 (GMT+3)   |   San Diego

The Argentinian government recently posted in its national bulletin (Boletin Oficial de la Republica de Argentina) that duties on alternative fuel vehicles including electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles will face lower import duties of zero to 5 percent instead of the previous duty of 35 percent. The duty change is effective immediately and remain effective for three years. According to the post, the government seeks to promote alternative fuels, renewable energies, reduce pollution and reduce domestic oil demand as the national oil production has fallen.

The duty benefit is limited to foreign manufacturing companies with manufacturing plants in Argentina such as General Motors, Ford, Toyota and Volkswagen.

The law is expected to promote the importation of 6,000 medium size passenger vehicles.
