The Luxembourg Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (LGBC) has announced that global steel giant ArcelorMittal has closed its steel production site in Schifflange, Luxembourg permanently. In 2011, ArcelorMittal had announced a temporary closure of the site, which affected around 700 employees. According to the LGBC, workers were saved by signing tripartite agreements in 2011, which enabled early retirement and reclassifications within other sites in Luxembourg

The Schifflange steel plant has an annual production capacity of 1 million mt of 130 mm x 130 mm billets. Its facilities include a twin shell shaft electric arc furnace and a six-strand continuous caster.

ArcelorMittal recently announced the launching of a feasibility study for the conversion of land located in Esch-sur-Alzette and Schifflange. The company is considering new developments such as housing, shops, offices, community facilities and additional facilities. The project, which was also welcomed by the LGBC, will be studied based on the principles of sustainable development and respect for the environment.
