Angang Steel in talks with US steelmaker for joint project

Bai Jingpu, deputy general manager of northeastern Chinese steelmaker Angang Steel Company Limited, has revealed that the mill is in talks with a US steelmaker regarding a possible joint project.

Saying that,the name of the US steel producer and the scope of the project in question could not be disclosed for the time being, Mr Bai confirmed that Angang Steel chairman Zhang Xiaogang has gone to the US for talks in the company of officials from the Liaoning provincial government.

Mr. Bai also said that Angang Steel is planning to carry out processing projects in Europe with local suppliers, though the details are still being discussed. He went on to say that work has commenced on Angang Steel's Karara iron mine project in Australia. Angang Steel holds a 36.28 percent stake in this project, being its biggest stakeholder. The project is expected to commence production in October 2011 and, after it is fully put into production, it will be able to produce 10 million mt of iron ore per year.
