AMEC awarded EPCM contract for Cerro Negro Norte iron ore project

International engineering and project management company AMEC has announced that it has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract by mining company Compañía Minera del Pacífico, a subsidiary of Chilean steel and iron ore producer Grupo CAP, for its $574 million Cerro Negro Norte iron ore mining project near Copiapo in Chile.
 
AMEC reckons the award strengthens its position in the expanding global iron ore industry. The company will play a vitally important part in developing the 27,000 mt per day operation.When completed, the Cerro Negro Norte iron ore mine will produce four million mt of iron ore concentrate annually over a period of 19 years. Work on the project will begin immediately and commissioning is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2013.
 
The value of AMEC's contract has not been announced.
