Alpha Natural Resources completes Massey Energy acquisition

Abingdon, Virginia-based thermal and metallurgical coal producer Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. announced Wednesday that it has completed its acquisition of Massey Energy Company. Alpha's intent to acquire Massey Energy was announced on January 29 of this year.

With the acquisition of Massey, Alpha Natural Resources now controls the second largest coal reserve base in the US with approximately five billion tons in the major coal basins of Central and Northern Appalachia, the Illinois Basin and the Powder River Basin.

Alpha Natural Resources will now operate 150 mines, 40 coal-preparation plants and employ 14,000 people.
