The Association for Iron & Steel Technology has named Nucor Corp. chairman and CEO John J. Ferriola as its 2016 Steelmaker of the Year, the association announced today.

According to the US-based association, Ferriola is being recognized for his leadership and strategic vision in growing Nucor Steel and maintaining its profitability in a down market.

“His contributions go beyond Nucor as a voice for the entire industry, articulating to policymakers the problem of unfair trade that is plaguing the US market and advocating for the strengthening of US trade laws and their enforcement,” the organization said in a statement.

AIST presents the award yearly to recognize steel industry leaders who have had an impact on the business. The award will be presented during the association’s annual conference and exposition, AISTech 2016, which is being held May 16-19 in Pittsburgh.

Ferriola is a Nucor veteran, having been with the company for more than 20 years. He has served as chief executive since January 2013.
