The Mexican Department of Energy (Sener) reported this week that it has received 322 applications to award contracts to extract natural gas in coal mines.

The Hydrocarbons Law published under Mexico’s recent energy reform allows mining companies to award contracts for exploration and extraction of natural gas in coal mines; a contract for each mine is required.

Miners applying to Sener include Minera del Norte, a subsidiary of Altos Hornos de Mexico (AHMSA), and Minera Saucito, a subsidiary of Peñoles.
