At least 27 workers were reportedly hospitalized due to a toxic leak at the Durgapur steel plant in West Bengal that belongs to India's state-owned steel giant Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL).

According to local news sources, the carbon monoxide leak at blast furnace No. 2 (BF-2) was detected at 11.15 am after workers in that section complained of breathlessness and drowsiness. Ten of the 27 workers who were rushed to Durgapur Steel Hospital were released after basic treatment, the doctors reportedly said, adding that there was no risk of fatality.

District administration officials said that the leak had been active for some time and was noticed only after the workers became ill. The matter still is being investigated.
