17th CPC National Congress opens in Beijing

The 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) opened at 9:00 a.m. on October 15, 2007, in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

This is a meeting of great importance held at a critical stage for China's development and reforms, and as such has attracted wide attention both at home and abroad.

The congress will review and summarize the historical progress achieved and experiences encountered since the country entered the path of reform and began to open up. The congress will also work out plans for China's future development, mapping out the development of the Chinese economy and society.

Moreover, announcements regarding retirements and new appointments among China's top decision-making levels will also be made during the congress.
